Berkhamsted II v Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 19 May 2018 at 1pm
Totteridge Millhillians Cricket Club Lost by 121 runs

Match report So the 3rd X journeyed to Berkhamsted, in the sunshine, after a very difficult week for all skippers aiming to get full sides out. Yes, it was an X. Not an XI.

The pitch looked full of runs – and so it proved for at least the first two-thirds of the match. We stuck to our task manfully, either with ball or in the field, but the gaps seemed to grow ever bigger and with a lightning fast outfield the score mounted pretty impressively.
However this was in the context of wickets falling regularly – for example the first over contained a boundary, a couple of big swishes/misses, and a wicket as Bips bowled the opener for a flighty 4. Boundaries galore followed but wickets too as no.2 flayed an airy drive into the hands of Chris in the Collingwood position at backward point. Neil’s unerring aim as the two batsmen went through the ‘yes, no, sorry’ routine took out another, a direct hit giving one of ‘em no chance … then two big shouts for LB resulted in the second getting the nod from Bob. It was all very T20, or even 100.
Meanwhile Steve had adopted a ‘middle of the innings’ role and kept it tighter – after drinks he ran in a bit harder and had no.3 excellently caught by Thiru. After beating the bat many, many times a routine nick to Ahsan gave him a second wicket. No.6 flayed anything full with strong support from his skipper and our plan to target the stumps of the lower order batsmen paid off, with wickets for all the bowlers, but not until 252 had been racked up.

Bill and Neil both deserved much better figures and had very little luck, while Thiru chipped in with a useful spell, and Bips was rewarded with 3-38 from his 9, and Steve 2-32 from 10.

Andy carried on in similar vein with handsome shots against lively pace, but again crafty spin took the wind out of our sails. It removed Andy for an excellent 46, and after a lively contribution from Ketan and a more watchful one from Ahsan, a couple of double-wicket maidens had us rocking and reeling – from 72-2 we lurched to 102-8.

Admittedly against change bowlers Munish and Steve played a few shots and salvaged a couple of batting points, and will be disappointed not to have gone on further.

Yes, we lost the game, but it was a real triumph to get ten decent cricketers on the park – who worked hard and stayed cheerful, so good on ‘em.
